British Amateurs With Metal Detectors Finding Ancient History

Walking along in Penarth, Wales, Derek Eveleigh recently found 6,000 copper coins dating to the Roman Empire.

Last year in Britian amateurs found over 10,000 metal objects of historical interest including "Bronze Age axes, Roman brooches and hairpins, medieval candlesticks and swords, and thousands of other relics."

"Before museum archaeologists began working with metal detector enthusiasts a decade ago, only about 25 reported discoveries annually met the official definition of "treasure" -- the most rare finds, which include gold and silver caches more than 300 years old. Every year since, that number has soared, hitting 802 last year.

"The collections in our museums would be thinner without the detectorists' finds," said Roger Bland, head of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum in London, as he pointed out jewelry, coins and other displays found by weekend warriors combing fields for fun."

Patents Filed Are Up 6% From 2007 - 11% From 2006

The current state of the economy is producing more inventions if the amount of patents filed is a measure.

According to a recent article in Forbes online "Last year, 495,000 patent applications were filed to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, up 6% from 2007 and 11% from 2006. Applicants range from large corporations to at-home tinkers."

Oddly enough Idaho is the second runner up in number of patents filed per state.

It's not just big companies filing patents, individuals or at home inventors "rank in the top three patent recipients for the 14 of 15 most patent-prolific states. That fraction may increase as large firms cut back on R&D to conserve cash."

Change Your Lifestyle - Change Your DNA

According to a study published in the National Academy of Sciences, a change in diet and exercise for just three months can change your DNA.

In a study conducted by the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, only three months of "major lifestyle changes, including eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy products, moderate exercise such as walking for half an hour a day, and an hour of daily stress management methods such as meditation", cause profound changes in gene activity.

According to the biopsy results "the men had changes in activity in about 500 genes -- including 48 that were turned on and 453 genes that were turned off.

The activity of disease-preventing genes increased while a number of disease-promoting genes, including those involved in prostate cancer and breast cancer, shut down."

India's 1st Female Auto-Rickshaw Driver Also Candidate For MP

It's not enough for Sunitha Choudury to be the first auto-Rickshaw driver traversing the streets of New Delhi. She is also campaigning to become a member of the Indian Parliament as a candidate of the United Women's Front.

Auto-Rickshaw drivers are at the bottom of the social barrel in India so Sunitha "moves around the city urging voters to support her in her auto-rickshaw or on foot. Other candidates travel in cavalcades or limousines, surrounded by flunkies and party workers and supported by the weight of their respective party organisations.

Choudhury's only campaign tool is a cheap leaflet showing her party symbol - an electricity pole.

"I'm hoping that everyone who has traveled in my auto-rickshaw will vote for me. I know what poverty can do to you." ... "Her manifesto is to give the poor in the capital electricity, homes, and piped water.

She could do with these things herself. She lives in a rented room and shares a toilet with eight other families. Her daily earnings are around 500 rupees. (500 Indian Rupee(s) = 10.1002 US Dollar(s))

Youngest Bone Marrow Donor in History Gives Gift of Life to Her Dad

When nine year old Gabbie was told her Dad had Leukemia last year, her parents explained all about bone marrow transplants. But nobody thought that her Dad's marrow would not match even one of the seven million registered donors.

That's when the doctors at John Hopkins Hospital suggested Gabbie as a possible donor. Her parents left the decision up to her, explaining that her marrow was the best chance to beat the rare and advanced form of leukemia.

For the half DNA match transplants John Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center is the leader in that area of research.

Gabbie recovered within a few days but says "I still have two little dots [from the procedure]. My mom has named them my love spots,". Her Dad according to the doctors is "making very good progress for someone just two months post-transplant." Read more at Baltimore WJZ.com

For The First Time in 90 Years a Jaguar is Photographed at the Smithsonian Research Station in Panama

Even though the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institutes's tropical biology field station, actually Barro Colorado Island in the middle of the Panama Canal, is considered "the best-studied piece of tropical real estate in the western hemisphere." not one photograph of a jaguar has been taken, until now.

At one time jaguars roamed the US, East from the Appalachian Mountains, West to California and South all the way to Argentina. The last jaguar seen in Texas was 1937 in San Marcos. Currently there are four known jaguars in the US, all of them having migrated North from Mexico into Southern Arizona. This photo is so exciting because it "offers proof positive that despite all the obstacles it faces this species is still making its way in Panama."
